Hey, hi, hello! I greet you from my cold bedroom after a month-long trip across the world. My grandmother and I left Canada at the beginning of February to visit South Africa. In my grandmother's words, it was like "traveling in a time warp," as we met with many family and friends. I spent a lot of my time doing research for the nonfiction book I'm writing for my masters degree, as the majority of the book takes place in South Africa.
Although the trip was hectic and busy, I've still be able to keep up on reading and television. Here's what I've been interested in lately.
CURRENTLY WATCHING
How to Get Away With Murder
How to Get Away With Murder is a show that has it all: great writing, great acting, and gripping commentary on important social issues. I'm also very into the fact that the actor who played Dean Thomas in the Harry Potter movies is also one of the main characters, Wes.
Amy
If you are even remotely interested in learning about mental illness, I highly recommend watching Amy. The Oscar-winning documentary is a raw and heartbreaking illustration of what its like to live with mental illness and addiction. Not only that, but the documentary does justice to Amy Winehouse's unparalleled singing and songwriting talent. The documentary holds a mirror to society, forcing us to acknowledge our toxic obsession with celebrity culture and the fatal effects it has.
CURRENTLY READING
The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson
It has taken me THREE YEARS, but my hunt for The Devil in the White City has come to an end. I know, it is a sin for a writer to purchase a fellow writer's book from a thrift store, but I think Larson will survive without me. I've heard rants and raves about this book. I've made a dent, but so far I'm impressed with the amount of detailed reporting Larson is able to cram into a mere few sentences.
